KUCHING CITY TOUR

SARAWAK CULTURAL VILLAGE
Nestled in the foothills of the legendary Mount Santubong lies the Sarawak
Cultural Village. This interactive 'living museum' is an attraction not to be
missed. The Village showcases the lifestyles of Sarawak's even major races -
Iban, Chinese, Malay , Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu and Penan. Visit each
'house' and experience their colourful traditions and lifestyles. There is a
music and dance performance at the air-conditioned theatre twice daily at
11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

SEMENGGOH ORANG UTAN (REHABILITATION SANCTUARY)
Just 30 minutes from the city, Semenggoh features an orchid nursery, a
botanical research center and several gardens. The greatest attraction,
however, is the wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary. This facility is not a zoo but
it is usually home to some Orang Utans, Hornbills, a Honey Bear or two,
Sea Eagles, Storks , numerous Gibbons and sometimes even several species
of wild cats endemic to the island. A favourite with visitors are the Orang
Utans, some of which are taught survival skills and released back to their
natural environments. Feeding times are at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. where
even released Orang Utans sometimes return for a free meal.

WILDLIFE & NATURE WATCHING CRUISE
This tour takes you around the rivers of the Santubong Peninsular, offering
you the chance of seeing some of Sarawak's fascinating wildlife. The cruise
starts at the Sarawak Boat Club. From there your boat cruises to the mouth
of the Santubong River, where Irrawaddy dolphins are often spotted. Your
boat then roams the mangrove lined rivers looking for wildlife. As the light
starts to fade we go in search of the rare proboscis monkey. Small groups
are often seen in the treetops at the waters edge, settling down for the
night. As dusk arrives we search for fireflies and crocodiles. Crocodiles
are often seen on the mud banks and brightly shining crocodile eves can
be spotted when a torch light is passed over the river. After searching for
crocodiles your boat proceeds further up river where fireflies gather at
night. Watch the fireflies flying around the branches of the mangroves,
momentarily lighting up the night sky.

BAKO NATIONAL PARK
Get close to nature with a day tour to Bako National Park. A half hour by
road & half hour by boat ride along the mangrove coast brings you to one
of the most ecologically diverse areas of Sarawak. Commonly spotted Bako
inhabitants include the Proboscis Monkey, the Silvered Langur, the Bearded
Pig as well as birds, insects and reptiles - the largest is the monitor lizard -
no crocodiles!

CROCODILE FARM & MINI ZOO
Set amidst lush greenery, the farm is home to over 1,000 salt and fresh
water crocodiles. It serves as a perfect sanctuary to these fearsome reptiles
kept in enclosures similar to their natural habitat. Watch the crocodiles
in action during feeding time. Explore the farm to see other fascinating
animals such as the bear cats, pythons, peacocks, otters and 'the world's
largest fresh water fish' - the Arapaima Gigas.

FAIRY & WIND CAVE
The Fairy Cave stands 3-storey high. After a quick climb, the cave opens up
into a main chamber. Sunlight streams into the chamber, revealing to you
the beautiful shapes of nature's creations, the stalactites and stalagmites.
The Wind Cave is a tunnel-like cave filled with bats and swiftlets. Look
around the walls of the cave and see if you can spot the bird nests.

ANNAH RAIS BIDAYUH LONGHOUSE
Bidayuh, the second largest ethnic group in Sarawak, is formerly known as
the 'Land Dayak' and was once also known as the 'Engineer of Bamboo'.
When making a visit to the Bidayuh longhouse, you will be able to see
the splendid architecture of their longhouse, which were build mostly
by bamboo. Annah Rais is one of the most famous Bidayuh longhouse in
Sarawak, which located about 100 km east from Kuching City and quite
close to the Indonesian border. The excursion will take about one and a
half-hour on the road. During your visit, you will also be able to view the
villagers with their own daily routine like rice pounding and winnowing,
basket and mat weaving, bamboo carving, etc. You will be brought into the
most unique and important structure, the 'Baruk' or the head house, which
situated in the middle of the longhouse. Enemy once used this as a fort to
protect the whole village from being attack. Inside the 'Baruk', you will
be able to view the real human skulls hanging around the fire place in the
middle and the also their sacred war drum.

2 DAYS 1 NIGHT - IBAN LONGHOUSE TRIP
The Batang Ai area lies about 4 hours from Kuching. The journey passes
through some of the more gentle terrain of Borneo. Enroute visit a Chinese
farmhouse growing almost all the farmer's own needs as well as some cash
crops. Also stop at Serian , a typical rural town and for lunch at Lachau,
redolent with the aroma of pepper. At the lakeside , take a ferry to the
Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort to a jungle hide away far from the
stresses of modern life. No trip to Batang Ai is complete without a visit to
an Iban Longhouse. Travel up the Lemanak River for about 45 minutes to
visit an Iban community and experience the daily activities of these friendly
folk. They will entertain you with traditional light refreshments and their
colourful 'Ngajat' dance.

KAYAKING EXPERIENCE TRIP
After about 40 minutes drive from town you are
transported to the mist covered hill sides of Borneo
Highlands with undulating terrain dotted by small scale
pepper farms where you'll alight at Bengoh, a delightful
Bidayuh village and staging point for journeys by foot or
rivers deep into the interiors.
Here you will be given brief paddling instructions and
safety briefing before proceeding down some steps to
a small tributary, where your parked kayaks await you for a group photo before we embark on our kayaking adventure. This shaded stream with overhanging trees, steep
banks and a bridge overhead has just enough room for your kayaks to get through and meanders a short distance
before opening into the vista of Sg. Sarawak Kiri.

The wider river will allow an easier passage and open up vistas with views of the secondary forests and the
farmlands of the local villagers. You'll see bananas and cocoa trees growing on these pockets of farm land. The
gentle flowing river aids the journey and soon everyone will be paddling with confidence and enjoying the scenery
as well as the fresh air. Sounds of birds and insects accompanied the kayakers along the entire journey. Culminating
in the sights of unique limestone rock outcrop formations on the right side of the river makes a wonderful photo-
opportunity for all. A short paddle away after this we will reach Kg Danu where we will alight on a pebbled island
under a pedestrian only suspension bridge.
Strolling across the suspension bridge while taking in the panoramic views and you will arrive at Kg Danu where
your transport awaits for the return journey to Kuching with memorable memories of your rainforest kayaking
experience.
